The debate over the core causes, drivers, and enablers of violent extremism and terrorism is at the forefront of today’s global policy discussions, with many countries’ research efforts focused on them. The reasons behind people's decisions to engage in violent extremism are the focus of much of the literature on the subject. However, violent extremism is multifaceted and immensely diverse. It cannot be predicted by a single variable, and no single factor in the VE process can be deemed “causal” It’s a “pathway entails a gradual process that includes a multitude of occurrences, experiences, perceptions, and role-players. Lebanon is not immune to the pervasive phenomena of terrorism and violent extremism that plagues the region and the world today. This book investigates the factors that lead to violent extremism, as well as the triggers, or tipping points. It explores the profiles and perspectives of individuals in Lebanon who have engaged in VE acts to further shed light on what shapes vulnerability to recruitment. It covers specific themes that converge together drivers and milestones of the journey to extremism. These themes are as follow: political, socioeconomic, religious and ideological factors, childhood experience, state and citizenship, grievances, relative deprivation, the tipping point and recruitment process.
